Why is Data Privacy is Important?
In the grander scheme of things, it’s clear that many people don’t really understand the importance of data privacy. Many people still view the breach of information on the internet as abstract and not affecting them in any way. It’s hard to see what damage could be done when someone can get access to personal information. It can almost seem like a “who cares” thing, but the facts are everybody should care about their data and privacy. There once was a time when your personal data was personal and only you and a select few people were privy to the most intimate details of your life. Unless you are a celebrity, you lived in quiet anonymity and enjoyed a decent sense of your personal life staying personal. It was the “price of fame” to have everyone in the world knowing what color your underwear was or what you ate for breakfast. But this is just not so anymore. Even if you’re a very private person, and don’t share any information online or on social media, the chances are good that you do use some type of internet technology that gathers data one you. Maybe you shop, bank or browse online. Let’s take it a step further. Maybe you don’t use the internet for anything except reading and browsing and you never buy anything, download music, or pay bills or bank online. Even if you are in “radio silence” you most likely still have discount cards for your supermarket, pharmacy or other cards. You may have credit cards or debit cards. If you use any of these discount cards, you may not believe it, but those stores are tracking what you purchase and they upload all that information to data brokers.Say you went the the local supermarket and bought a dozen eggs, milk and juice. A few weeks later you get coupons in the mail for eggs, milk and juice. Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be. The marketing companies who bought your data sold their calculations to a company who sells eggs and another that sells milk and one that sells juice. They know you bought XYZ brand, and now they want your business, so they are going to solicit you by giving you coupons. They just breached your privacy to do that. And you should care because that could have been your medical information, which is also online, or your financial information, again which is also online. When is the line drawn between what is shared and what isn’t?
So, either you vow to never use a discount card, and pay only cash for everything, everywhere from now on in and swear off social media and the internet for ever, so help you, or you find a better way to deal with the slow and fast leaking of your private life and details you may think you’re sharing online with one or only a few people on your social media, things like “Wow, I just got these great blue under-drawers from XYZ store on sale! I love them!” or ” I just bought a new boat, can’t wait for you all to jump aboard and come cruising’ with us!” These may seem like private messages, but you social media company is keeping track of everything you post, even private messages. Are you starting to see why your privacy online is very important?
