What Can I do if I’m being Stalked Online?
It can be really unnerving to know someone is so obsessed with you that they have to know what you’re doing and saying all the time. The biggest problem is that it’s very hard to tell on sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn if you actually “know” someone or are just associated to them somehow, like they are in the same field or are a friend of a friend. Catfish, if you’re not familiar with the term, are people using a different image and name just to spy on you or get information about you, or weirdly, just to pretend to be someone else, which happens a lot on dating sites. Also, as mentioned, really wacky stalkers will pay others to spy on you! It’s hard to know who you can trust. Having just one stalker in your lifetime will, unfortunately, make you paranoid for the rest of your life, which really sucks. There is a saying though, “If you’re not paranoid, you don’t know anything about technology.” This should make you more careful and less likely to share personal details with strangers who could become stalkers.
It used to be if you had a stalker you could pretty much identify that person and get it taken care of. Also, only famous people had real stalkers. This is not the case anymore in the 21st century. With access to people from behind a cell phone or computer screen, stalking has become rampant all over the world. Ordinary people are being stalked for the most ridiculous reasons imaginable. And with so many people using technology to try to cause damage to anyone they perceive as a threat, you have to err on the side of paranoia, or you could find yourself with problems you never bargained for.
Beyond stalkers there are other people who are just jealous of anyone they perceive as competition or maybe they want what that person has. That individual just may be a little off mentally and they have too much time on their hands. They stalk and harass those they are jealous or afraid of. Lastly, which is rarer, there are those who are really dangerous and seek to do serious physical, emotional and/or mental harm to their victim for some real or imagined slight. Usually the “issue” they are obsessed with is made-up or imagined in the person’s head, or it’s so far blown out of proportion because they can’t get a handle on reality and they are grandiose.
Twenty years ago is was rare to even meet a regular person who was being stalked. If they were, they could go to the police and get it taken care of with a restraining order. Now, it’s hard to tell who your creepy stalker even is. Everyone knows at least one person who’s been stalked online. If a stalker has a lot of time and money, and they’re really off their rocker, they will go to great lengths to follow you. A new trend is using home monitoring equipment and technology to harass and stalk x partners.
You are not wrong to be worried if you’re being stalked in person or online. If you know who the person is, you should block them from all accounts and then go to the police and get a restraining order. Then you should contact a private data removal company like Wiperts. They can help get personal data offline so it’s not easy for a stalker to find your home address and phone number or other details. Always take this issue seriously and get help from experts!
