Website knows who your family members are and where they live
Would you be surprised to know that there’s a website out there on the internet that knows who all of your family members are and where they live? Many people are stunned to find this out, but it’s true. There’s not only one such website, but a few that keep track of you, your family member, your former spouses, even former live in boyfriends or girlfriends. This data is kept in databases and used to convince people to search for more information about you and your family. They get this information from various sources, but usually it’s gathered from trolling social media. If you have Facebook and have your family members associated to you on your account or profile, and your account is set to be public, then anyone can see who your relations are. If you include information such as your hometown, the high school you graduated from and other information, then this data can also be trolled when your accounts are public.
The most important piece of advice that anyone can give you about online privacy, is to set all of your accounts to private as soon as possible and tell all your family members to do that also. Teens and children should always have private accounts; they should not have any social media accounts, but if they have one that is monitored by parents, they should always be private and all “friend” or follow requests should be carefully vetted. Also, beware of catfish. If you’re not familiar with the term, it’s a name for people who pretend to be someone else online. For instance, an old perverted man or woman can pose as a teen ager or child, even using a child’s picture, posts and childish images to pretend to be another kid. In reality, these weirdos are just trying to get close to your kids or teens. Make sure you school your children and family members about these things and tell them to report any one who’s asking a lot of personal information or seems a little weird and they don’t really know the person. For example, if a follower on social media that your kid doesn’t know for sure is another kid from school or somewhere else, starts saying creepy things or asking questions about their plans or where they live or asking for phone numbers or pictures, make sure your kids tell you or someone so it can be checked out. Social media can be a great tool for sharing information, but it can also be misused by creepers who think they are anonymous.
Be sure that you tell your family to not post personal information such as home addresses and phone numbers to public websites, and never ever give this information to people online unless they are people you know or have gotten to know. You can go to the websites that are posting this information and ask them to opt you out or remove it. They may or may not do it. Many will simply re-post the information months later. If the information is about a minor, they have to remove that information by law. You can contact local authorities if websites refuse to remove private information about minors.
