It may seem impossible but many people have found ways to that you can enjoy social media and still protect your privacy. It’s not easy to do this and it takes some effort and ingenuity on your part, but it is possible. For most people, finding their private information all over the internet is the final straw that pushes them to go this route. Often, finding your name online, or your address and phone number is enough to push people to make changes to their social media habits. Being incognito is the best way to go if you want some privacy online. People go through a lot of trouble to get their personal information removed from the internet. Sometimes people even pay a fee to have an internet removal service to do the work for them. After they go through this trouble and delete information like names and addresses from the internet, they don’t want to go through the process again. So creating an alias works perfectly.
If you want to be on sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, WeChat and others anonymously, then you need to create an email address that is just for social media. You can use a fake name, fake age, and fake everything to set-up your accounts, if you want to connect with people you know just let them know that you’re using a pen name online to avoid data theft. Most people understand why you are using an alias or nickname instead of your own name. You can also use your business name or another moniker. Whatever works for you. This way you get to interact with social media outlets and express your opinion mostly anonymously.
In addition to using an alias name for your social media accounts, you should not post personal information on any site for any reason. Things like your address, phone number, age, date of birth, children’s names, family names, and other private information should not be posted publicly, or even privately online. Be careful about posting information that will give away your address or exact location to data miners who often like to categorize people by their zip code. Be wary of anyone direct messaging you asking for information that is private or personal. If someone direct messages you with anything you find annoying or odd, unfollow them without hesitation. Don’t worry about hurting someone’s feelings, if they are being bold enough to DM you with weird questions or posts, then they deserve to be unfollowed. It breaks the private code of social media respect to weirdly DM. Unless you have something truly helpful or important to discuss, do not DM random strangers with your pushy business hard sell. This is common courtesy not great selling technique.
Lastly, don’t connect your social media incognito accounts with your identifying accounts. In other words, if you have a Facebook page that uses your real name and information, don’t connect it with your alias Instagram account. This makes it obvious it is you and gives data, miners access to all your new posts and likes and dislikes and contacts and images.
