Is it a Problem if I set My Facebook and Twitter Profiles to Public?
Few people check the settings on their social media websites and applications. However, the default setting is usually set to public. What does that mean exactly? It means that anyone with a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or other accounts can view all of your information, not just your status and profile image, but also all of your posts and other information. Why is that a big deal you may wonder, well if you have a past at all, any past, a former boyfriend or girlfriend, wife or husband, a former fair-weather friend, a surprisingly stealthy stalker, or a jealous, bored, desperately competitive housewife, then you’ll not want your personal information flying in the wind. Don’t fret, it can be fixed.
There are multiple settings on most social media websites. For instance, Facebook has a setting that allows friends only, friends of friends or public viewing. If you go into your privacy settings of any application you can have some control over who sees what. Even LinkedIn has settings for 1st and 2nd-degree connections ability to view all of your info as opposed to anyone with our without a LinkedIn account. The default is set to let anyone online view all or your information including your profile picture, current and former employees and some other information, including recommendations. So, unless you want anybody online seeing all of your professional information, then you should change that setting. This keeps your personal information more private and somewhat secured. On Twitter, changes to your privacy settings are similar. You can have only your followers see your information or you can let anybody see it. Unlike LinkedIn, many Twitter users have aliases and don’t usually use their real name. Unless you’re a troll, using the benefits of LinkedIn require you to use your real name and information. Making up an employment history will not do you any good if you’re using the app to network and find a new job or new customers.
While it’s important to keep your privacy settings in a mode that is as secure as possible, often, despite our best efforts at keeping our information offline, sometimes it’s too late and various data miners and data harvesters have already gotten some of your personal information such as your address, phone number or other info. As a result of all this data gathering, you may do a search and find out that your personal information has already ended up online. If you find your name and address are online, contact an internet removal service who can show you how to remove your information from the internet. They can also delete information and remove your address from the internet.
