Marriott Hotel, NASA Data Breach, Affect Millions Worldwide
Close to half a billion people might have been affected
Many people use hotels while travelling. It’s common to hand over all of your personal information at a hotel – name, address, passport, travel visa, who you’re traveling with, the duration of your stay, phone number, and plenty of other information. We’ve all been in this situation: You’ve just gotten off a long flight or had to deal with multiple delays and all you want to do is rest your head for a little bit before heading out and beginning your journey. Hotels rely on this, in addition to the fact that they probably already have your money and you have nowhere else to stay. They type your information into their computer, give you your room card, and you can rest easy for the time being.
Now, millions of people are finding out that their personal information was stolen by hackers in a massive data breach. Although the government preaches about safety and security, and points fingers at foreign governments for cyber hacking, the reality is that many industries simply don’t care about cybersecurity because the laws are ridiculously outdated. Reality is stranger than fiction. Think about it. The government and companies both claim to value cybersecurity and protection, but don’t do much to actually initiate change. These problems happen all the time, even though both the government and corporations have enough money and expertise at their disposal to rectify the issues they simply choose not to unless forced.
You may become victim of identity fraud because of these data breaches, but there’s barely any punishment doled out to these companies for cutting corners. In the end, you’re expected to cover your own bases. Wiperts can help you remove personal information from the internet and protect your privacy. When your personal information reaches the internet, you don’t want to be alone when trying to clean it all up. Different websites require different procedures. Many countries don’t have a set of comprehensive data privacy laws like the European Union. You’re at the mercy of Google and other websites without the help of professionals like Wiperts.
Cybersecurity might just be harder than rocket science
NASA has been hacked again. The organization doesn’t even know how many employees may have been affected, but the timeframe is more than a decade.
“NASA Civil Service employees who were on-boarded, separated from the agency, and/or transferred between centers, from July 2006 to October 2018, may have been affected,” a NASA Assistant Administrator said.
According to ZDNet and NASA, Social Security Numbers were compromised due to the breach. It’s unfortunate that the world’s brightest minds have to deal with the exact same problems as non-geniuses, but that’s just life on planet Earth. Whether you’re a NASA employee or a hotel guest, data breaches can seriously expose you to life changing experiences like identity theft.
Three things make you a juicier target for criminals and foreign governments trying to disrupt your life: High yearly income, high rank/position, and how available your personal information is on the dark web. Wiperts can help remove this personal information from the internet, making sure that your private life stays private. Don’t become a victim because of weak cybersecurity. Protect yourself in a time of huge data breaches.
